Volunteer

Volunteers are vital to Reach. They provide essential assistance to our staff and this, in turn, supports our work with young people.

Whether you help out in the office or use your networking skills to help us with our events – your contribution supports the work Reach does with young people across Australia. Check out the range of volunteer opportunities on offer in Victoria and NSW.

ONE-OFF VOLUNTEER

Occasionally Reach requires volunteers for one-off event opportunities. It’s times like these that we really need people to accept the call to adventure.  This is an excellent way to help us get instant results.

We advertise the one-off volunteer opportunities here, as they become available.

EVENTS VOLUNTEER

Interested in volunteering on one of our fundraising-event committees? Our committees help source donated items for raffles and attract new guests to our events. For example, volunteers fulfil the following roles for the following Reach events:

  • Be able to personally fill two or more tables, consisting of friends, colleagues, clients, etc.
  • Assist with sourcing items for main auction, silent auction and prizes.
  • Participate as a team to address issues such as the theme for the event, staging, room/table decoration.
  • Be available on the morning/afternoon and night of the event for set up and assistance on the night.
  • The committee meets three months prior to the event. Meetings are usually held in the evening on weekdays, for approximately 1-2 hours, once every three weeks.
REACH BREAKFAST
  • Assist with seeking sponsorship, if appropriate.
  • Assist with selling three or more tables to corporate guests
  • The committee meets three months prior to the event. Meetings are usually held on weekdays for approximately 1 to 2 hours, in the CBD area.
OFFICE SUPPORT VOLUNTEER

We’re always looking for people who can help out with the following:

  • Data entry.
  • Reception work.
  • Mail outs.
  • Simple logistics.

This work is mostly during the day and occasionally in the evening at our Collingwood (VIC) and Surry Hills (NSW) premises. Previous experience in Microsoft Office (Excel and Word) is required.

From time to time we also call for skilled volunteers who assist with special projects.

These opportunities depend on your skills, interest and availability.

CAN I WORK WITH YOUNG PEOPLE DIRECTLY?

The typical role of a Reach volunteer is to provide administrative and logistic support at the office and at our events. We need to point out that this does not involve attending workshops or working with young people.  Our specially trained Reach crew delivers our workshops.

If you are between the ages of 16 and 20 you can apply to become one of our crew.

If you are specifically interested in working with young people, you might be interested in becoming a mentor for a young person. Reach and Whitelion have an enduring partnership to deliver a unique mentoring program for young people aged 13-17 living in residential care. This program is called 'Ramp'.

Becoming a Ramp mentor involves a 12-month commitment of around 3 hours per fortnight, plus attendance at workshops and a weekend away. All Ramp Youth Mentor opportunities are coordinated by Whitelion: www.whitelion.asn.au

WHAT’S THE MINIMUM TIME COMMITMENT OF A VOLUNTEER?

Due to the comprehensive procedures associated with registering as a volunteer with Reach (such as Police and Working with Children checks) we require a commitment to volunteering of 12 months or more.

CAN I GET WORK EXPERIENCE?

Reach is often approached by students seeking work experience in social work, youth work or psychology.

We are unfortunately unable to accept student work experience placements at this time.

CAN I GAIN EMPLOYMENT AFTER VOLUNTEERING?

As a volunteer with Reach you are welcome to apply for any position promoted here.

WHAT HAPPENS ONCE I APPLY?

Our Volunteers Manager reviews all applications and places them on our database.  If an opportunity arises that matches yours we will contact you for a chat.

We’re grateful for all of the applications we receive and appreciate the generous offers of help.

Last year a myriad of volunteers donated over 3,000 hours to Reach and it made the world of difference.

By applying to become a Reach volunteer, we understand that you’d like to be contacted to help out if and when the need arises.

If not, please email reception@reach.org.au to be removed from our volunteer database.

RECRUITMENT PROCESS

As opportunities arise, applicants who are selected from our database will be asked to attend an interview.

Following an interview, those who meet the eligibility requirements will be asked to come along to the necessary training and orientation activities, before commencing in their role.

All volunteers are required to obtain a Working with Children Check and National Police Check. This ensures we meet our commitment to maintaining a child-safe organisation.

Please note, as a volunteer you do not work directly with young people (this is the job of our Reach crew).

In the interim we’d still love for you to get involved in one of our One-Off volunteering gigs or join us at one of our Reach events.

Because volunteering is a long-term commitment, please read the Volunteering FAQs carefully and reflect on how volunteering might fit into your life.

If you’re not sure if Reach is the right for you, there are heaps of other organisations that could use your volunteering help. Here’s a free online resource of other volunteering gigs across Victoria and NSW.
